This is Mom: We have been blown away with all the amazing support everyone has given us. What can we say except THANK YOU. It has meant sooooo much to know all of you are so caring and supportive. Putting your best furiend down is a hard decision to make and you always wonder “is it the right time”….”should we do it”? Somehow you know. I think Toby knew.
Sage is doing fine. I think being with Toby to the end was good for her. We watched her carefully, as did the vet, during the whole procedure to ensure it wasn’t too much for her. (Lots of treats helped.) I think dogs process death a bit better than humans, and hopefully this gave her a sense of why Toby is no longer here. She seems to miss him, but we are staying busy.
Sage will be back with all her adventures really soon. She’s miffed that I’m taking the ‘puter away with me to San Francisco. She’ll be home with Dad though, cooking up some new schemes to find the nearest mud-puddle!
Toby here: The battle has raged for almost two years now. I’m tired and pretty battle-scared. My special vet gave me lots of potions, but that evil spinal myleopathy dragon has mortally wounded me. Sage has been at my side all the way and has been licking my ears lately…I think she secretly hopes there’s some magic that will help. I tell her it’s time to go over the Rainbow Bridge.
I’ve seen Maggie beckoning on the other side, so I know it’s time.
She told me my legs will work again and I’ll be able to run and play with her.
Don’t be sad, Sage. I’ll be there for you when you see something new and it scares you. I’ve taught you a lot and it’s time for me to go.
So, in my regal status as Sir Pantsalot of the Round Bowl, I now bequeath you my sword, and all my worldly goods. Be strong, little one. I love you.
Mom here: Toby went over the Rainbow Bridge today. He fought a valiant fight, but yesterday could no longer stand on his own and progressively got worse. We knew it was time. The vet came to the house and his struggles are now over. Sage was with him to the end.
Run free, Toby. We will miss you. A lot.
Are made for standin’
And that’s what I’ma gonna do
Are you ready boots? Start walkin’!
Toby here: I’ve had lots of trouble keeping those back legs under me here lately. Wood floors are just too slippery and even though Mom put some rugs down in a few spots in the kitchen, I was still sliding down. The old legs just aren’t what they used to be.
Then she put these boots on my back feet and things are much easier again. You know, it’s the simple things now-a-days that make my life better. Like Sage checking out my boots (are you jealous, Sage?)
Or, when she licks my ear.
She’s my pal!
